Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Cure

linden methodThousands of families across the country are looking for an obsessive compulsive disorder cure for their loved ones. This is at times an irritation for sufferers and families alike, whilst at other times it can literally ruin lives and perhaps you have experience of such behaviour.

Before treating obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) it is useful to understand why and how the symptoms occur and the possible consequences. OCD is a form of anxiety that occurs when there is a problem in the way the brain deals with normal worries and doubts. It affects about 3.3 million adults in the United States.

A patient’s a compulsive behavior reduces their anxiety and as a result they will continue acting out that behaviour over and over again. They will realise that their obsessions are a product of their own mind. In spite of the fact this interferes with day to day activities, the patient will not be able stop their behaviour without the help of an obsessive compulsive disorder cure.

Obsessions can vary and can be as serious as having thoughts of violent behaviour such as stabbing, shooting, maiming, or hitting. A common obsession is the thought of contamination and the constant need to clean up dirt, germs or faeces even if these things are not apparent. A sufferer of OCD may also have repetitive doubts and worries about a tragic event and may repeat or count images, words or objects in the environment.

So what can we do to stop this behaviour or at least lessen the intensity of it? Well if you are a sufferer, the good news is that as many as 70 percent of patients who receive treatment will see some improvement. Treatment will ordinarily be administered in the form of medication and therapy.

In many cases medication and therapy is combined. It should be noted that medication by itself will not act as an obsessive compulsive disorder cure, but it will help to control the symptoms while the therapy will help the patient to deal with the anxiety.

The best and most commonly used medication prescribed for OCD sufferers are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. These will include fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft) and fluvoxamine (Luvox) as well as tricyclic antidepressants such as clomipramine (Anafranil).

By taking these prescribed drugs patients should experience a lessening of the frequency and intensity of their obsessions. This will normally take at least three weeks before any improvement is seen. Assuming the medication works, the patient will have to continue taking it indefinitely.

As mentioned already medication is often combined with some form of behavioral therapy. Patients will likely have sessions focusing on some or all of:

· Aversion therapy,
· Thought stopping,
· Thought switching,
· Flooding,
· Implosion therapy,
· Exposure and response prevention

If you attend psychotherapy sessions they will be provided by a trained mental health professional such as a psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker or a counsellor. These sessions will help sufferers of OCD learn how to deal with the anxiety and hopefully behave in a non-obsessive manner.

If you feel you are an OCD sufferer but are not sure about it, it is well worth paying a visit to your physician. They can have you checked over and prescribe medication to help or recommend a trained therapist. A combination of the two is more likely to offer an obsessive compulsive disorder cure.
